Vulnerability in Technological Cultures: New Directions in Research and Governance

  10/02/2012       bigsanek      0 Comments

Novel technologies and scientific advancements offer not only opportunities but risks. Technological systems are vulnerable to human error and technical malfunctioning that have far-reaching consequences: one flipped switch can cause a cascading power failure across a networked electric grid. Yet, once addressed, vulnerability accompanied by coping mechanisms may yield a more flexible and resilient society. This book investigates vulnerability, in both its negative and positive aspects, in technological cultures. The contributors argue that viewing risk in terms of vulnerability offers a novel approach to understanding the risks and benefits of science and technology. Such an approach broadens conventional risk analysis by connecting to issues of justice, solidarity, and livelihood, and enabling comparisons between the global north and south. The book explores case studies that range from agricultural practices in India to neonatal intensive care medicine in Western hospitals; these cases, spanning the issues addressed in the book, illustrate what vulnerability is and does. The book offers conceptual frameworks for empirical description and analysis of vulnerability that elucidate its ambiguity, context dependence, and constructed nature. Finally, the book addresses the implications of these analyses for the governance of vulnerability, proposing a more reflexive way of dealing with vulnerability in technological cultures.ContributorsMarjolein van Asselt, Martin Boeckhout, Wiebe Bijker, Tessa Fox, Stephen Healy, Anique Hommels, Sheila Jasanoff, Jozef Keulartz, Jessica Mesman, Ger Palmboom, C. OBSESSED: The Compulsions and Creations of Dr. Jeffrey Schwartz

I currently live in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, where Ive worked for the last 10 years as a journalist covering the courts, crime, cops, politics, and lots of human interest features. Like a lot of journalists, I backslid into reporting after a brief, furtive attempt to write a novel. In literary nonfiction, however, I found a way to satisfy my urge to write creatively without going through the messy business of imagining all the details. The great personal lesson for me in reporting is that everyone really does have a great story to tell, and Ive yet to meet anyone—whether hero or villain—who hasnt done the best they could, from moment to moment. Sometimes, we are simply found wanting. And other times, we rise above any reasonable expectation people might have for us. In sum, I find working in journalism to be a tremendous honor. People entrust me with the most intimate details of their lives. Its up to me to render their story in a way that does justice to it. I married my wife, Lisa, in June 2010, after a five-year courtship. I worked as an editor and senior writer during a stint with Philadelphia Weekly, from 2002 to 2007. Then I left for a position at Philadelphia Magazine in July 2007, went on leave to write the book Fringe-ology: How I Tried to Explain Away the Unexplainable-And Couldnt, and will begin there again in July 2011.

A serial killer mystery genre piece. A little predictable, some blood and violence and a lot about sailing. And a drop dead gorgeous female FBI officer. Of course. Since I have been reading Mark Brownʻs Ben Macmillan detective mysteries, set in Hawaii and written in the 1990ʻs, this title written in 2009 came off as a bit derivative. Though maybe every mystery reader reads the profile of a serial killer and writes it into their novel.
